Laxmi Pooja – Third day of Tihar Festival

laxmi-puja

Laxmi Pooja is the third day of the Tihar festival in Nepal. Tihar is a five-day-long festival celebrated by Nepalese spreading all over the world. It is also known as the festival of lights, and in the Indian state, the festival is known as Deepawali. Both are known as the festival of light but celebrate in their own way.

Laxmi Puja is also known as Gai Tihar (Worshipping Cow) because, on this day along with the Goddess Laxmi, people worship the National animal Cow. In Nepal, Cow is signed as a living form of goddess Laxmi.

In the morning, people worship the cow, and in the evening they welcome the Goddess Laxmi. Since the goddess Laxmi is worship in the evening, the entire country looks pretty bright and shiny, as probably every house is decorated with lights, and flowers.

The way of decorating the house with cow dung & red soil is not that fascinating in the houses of cities, but still, in the village areas, people decorated the house with cow dung & red soil on the occasion of Laxmi Pooja. There is also a tradition of playing Bhailo on this day. It’s a kind of entertainment, where especially the group of female visits most of the houses of the area, starts singing the Tihar song, perform a different cultural dance, and asks house owner to gift something to them.

Since the goddess, Laxmi is fond of cleanliness, and tidy not only the surroundings or environment but also wants the purity of the human soul. It is believed that the goddess Laxmi steps her foot only in those houses, whose owners have the pure soul, who always thinks of positivity, and keeps the surrounding always clean and tidy.

So, this is all about Laxmi Pooja, which always falls on the third day of one of the biggest festivals of Nepal Tihar.
