Basantapur Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square else know as “Basantapur Durbar Square” is the place of distinctive wood carving and bountiful history of our great Malla and Shah King. It is one of the three Durbar Square listed on UNESCO heritage site. Kathmandu Durbar Square is the central hub of tourists to explore more about alluring and fascinating art, culture and tradition of Nepalese (specially Newar community).

Kathmandu Durbar Square is the place of the spectacular legacy of traditional and cultural architecture built by our respectful and heartfelt Kings during their ruling period. Kathmandu Durbar Square is in the center of Capital and in front of the old royal palace, surrounded by different temples, art and wooden architecture such as Kasthamandap, Kal Bhairav Temple, Taleju Temple, Indrapur and Vishnu Temple.

Basantapur area is the place of the Royal family, where probably all the Royal activities are performed in this palace. So, being the popular royal area, you will get a chance to check out different arms, armors and old architectural monuments preserved as the Historic monuments in Museum. Also, you will find the history behind the Durbar Square and Hanuman Dhoka, in Hanuman Dhoka Museum preserved and protected by Nepal Army.

Kathmandu Durbar Square or Basantapur Durbar Square is surrounded by three closely linked squares, A former elephant stalls (Basantapur Sq. Area) at the south, the main entrance of Durbar square at west and second part of Durbar Square at the Northeast.

Around the Basantapur, along with durbar square you will get a chance to catch up and explore around with great and artistic building, temples and Monuments. Popular temples and architecture you will find around are The Taleju Temple, The Jagannath Temple, The Kal Bhairav, Sweet- Bhairav, Hanuman Dhoka, Kasthamandap, and Nautalle Durbar.

Move around as Free Man:

The area of Durbar square is not limited within a KM. There is a free open wide area around the durbar, you can easily move across and explore the old historic temples, monuments and discover alleys. The area around durbar is messy with different alleys, you can explore right away.

Delight the taste of your tongue:

The street shop and cart placed right away in Kathmandu Durbar Square prepare the food beyond your expectation. The old traditional lassi, street sekuwa, MO: MO, etc are too epic in taste in too cheap price. Dozens of cultural restaurant, cafe and street place available around the Durbar square, where you can taste typical Nepalese food or spend a couple of hour with your girl having a Coffee.

Nepal’s best tattoo artists are around your city, where you can place the exclusive memory of your trip to this place. There are lots of tattoo artists around the Kathmandu valley but the one with great experience are right in Kathmandu Durbar Square, Basantapur.

Shop traditional art and hand-crafts:

There are different stalls and shop around the Basantapur, where you can hover around and get some exclusive gift or memory that reflects Nepal’s pride and diversity and also, preserves and promote the Nepalese culture.

After 2015 earthquake, some parts of the Heritage site is still in the construction process, so if you are planning to visit right now, then you will get a chance to visit only a few temples and monuments.
