Lumbini the Birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha

The pride of Nepal, Lumbini is the birthplace of most revered figures Lord Siddhartha Gautama, globally known as the historical Gautam Buddha. Being one of the historical sites, yearly thousands of Buddhists pilgrims spreading over the world, explore Lumbini.

Lumbini spreading over 1.96 ha bears the 25 different architects Buddhist monasteries, built by different Buddhist nation, the sacred Mayadevi Gardens, old historic sacred Buddhist temples, and different architectural design and monuments built around the temples.

Lumbini is around 300km distant away from Kathmandu, and 22km distant away from Siddharthanagar (Bhairawa). Anyone traveling from east to west Nepal or heading towards the popular tourist city Pokhara gets and considerable option to visit the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, Lumbini.

In 563 B.C queen, Mayadevi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama in the beautiful Sal grove, which now turns to be one of the attractions in Lumbini temple. While Queen Mayadevi is on the way to the Lumbini Garden on Baishakha Purnima (Full Moon Day of May in 623BC), she took a bath in the sacred pond known as Pushkarini. As soon as she gets out from the pond, she gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama. In 528 BC, Siddhartha got enlightenment and gets the title of Gautam Buddha and founded Buddhism.

Cambodian Monastery

It is another beautiful and well-designed temple in Lumbini, that is surrounded by the decorated wall with intricate design. The top of the monastery is surrounded by four 50m green snakes.

Royal Thai Buddhist Monastery

The Royal Thai Buddhist Monastery is compounded by the fine piece of architecture, that is close to the north end of the pond. It is another great architect monastery in the monastic zone.

Zhong Hua Chinese Buddhist Monastery

The Chinese Buddhist Monastery Zhong Hua is another pagoda-style monastery in Lumbini that covers the small Forbidden city.  The inside design is an oasis of peace.

Myanmar Golden Temple

It’s is the oldest temple in Lumbini, built with the Myanmar architectural design. Among the three prayer halls in this temple, corncob-shaped shikhara (tower) is an impressive one.

Korean Buddhist Temple

It is under construction, and the overall architecture of this temple is somehow familiar to the temples of South Korea.

Nepal Vjarayana Mahavihara Temple

It is a Newari temple compounded around the Lumbini.

The Pillar of Ashoka

It is another mark of Gautam Buddha’s birthplace in Lumbini that stands right after the Mayadevi temple. The temple is built by Ashoka Maurya (ruler of different Indian Sub-continent)

This museum collects the pictures and photos of Buddha and Buddhists sites across the world. It is in the northern end of the compound.

Best Season to Visit Lumbini

On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, there used to be the grand celebration and Mela too. So, with our recommendation, the best time to visit Lumbini is in between April and May, where Budhha Jayanti falls. Every year, Buddha Jayanti falls on a different date, so it’s better to look at the calendar and fix the date before you visit the Lumbini.

Else, if you just want to explore Lumbini, then you can visit in any month as the whole year, the Lumbini premises is free to explore out.

How to Reach Lumbini

There are daily flights available from Kathmandu to Siddhartha Nagar (Bhairahawa), which is the fastest way to reach Lumbini. From Siddhartha Nagar, you need to catch the regular bus to reach Lumbini temple. Else, you can also book the deluxe bus ticket, that takes the route via Siddhartha highway from Kathmandu bus park. So, it easily travels destination from Kathmandu.
