After walking the long trail from Taplejung Bazaar for two days by foot, you will get a chance to capture out the beautiful scenes of Timbung Pokhari and its pleasant surrounding. Timbung Pokhari is the religious place stationed at an altitude of 4480 m from the sea level. The alluring and shinning lakes in between Sindingwa Rural Municipality and Panchthar’s Yangwarak Rural Municipality is one of the prominent tourist destinations that are to be explored.
The name Timbung Pokhari is kept after the Limbu word “Timbak”, which means the firing of a gun. Occasionally, the lake starts sounding as the someone is firing the gun. So, Locals used to call the place as Timbung Pokhari.
The wide range of Kanchenjunga which is 466m in length and 154 m in width can be seen from this place. People often visit this place on the occasion of Janai Purnima and Nag Panchami. The lake is covered with white snow, probably in every season.
According to the local belief, it is somehow true that when devotees offer the traditional puja in this places, the wishes of devotees came true and often live their rest of life with full of peace and happiness. The pond often curses the one who has sin, greed, and jealousy in his/her mind.
How to reach Timbung Pokhari:
In average it takes 4 days to reach our final destination Timbung Pokhari from Kathmandu. Spending a night in around the Pokhari extends your journey. You need to enjoy the two days hiking trip from Chyangthapu, as there is no direct road service available to reach Timbung Pokhari.
Being the border of India and Nepal, pilgrims from India and Nepal occasionally visit the place and offers the puja. Mostly pilgrims from Manipur, West Bengal, and Sikkim used to visit this place throughout the year.

Importance of Timbung Pokhari:
Timbung Pokhari is not prominent religious destinations. People often visit this place to explore the natural bio-diversity this place holds. Also, the area around the Pokhari is surrounded by different medicinal herbs such as Bikham, Kutki, Padmachal, Jatamasi, Panchaule, and Yarshagumba. Aromatic herbs such as Sunpati, Bhairungpani, and Sikpale also available in this region.
The place is also the homeland of different wild and rare animals such as Himalayan Monal, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Himalayan Goral beer, Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, red panda and more. These wild creatures seasonally used to visit Timbung Pokhari. If you are lucky and climate is favorable, you will get a chance to capture the rarest animals.
When to visit Timbung Pokhari?
The perfect time to visit the Timbung Pokhari is between March – October and in Mid-July – August. In this period of time, sight seekers get a chance to explore the natural bio-diversity, scenic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Pokhari itself in a more close-up look.
